Resistor short circuit? Is this a stupid question

Resistor short circuit

Will any resistor become short circuit or become an open circuit?

First of all, what is a resistor or what is resistance?

A resistor is a semi-conductor used in electronic circuit to resist or control the flow of voltage. So a circuit that have a resistor has a resistance.

Imagine a resistor as the hose or pipe connection from your water tank. The tank is the voltage source and the pipe is the resistor.

The tank may be about 2000 liters and the pipe connected to the tank must be about an inch. You can imagine how to water flows while we open the tap.

Have you ever seen any pipe or hose expanded and allow the water from the tank to flow through? No way, the pipe may broke down or get blocked, but never expand.

So the resistor is like the pipe. It will break down to a high value or an open circuit. open circuit means the supply will not flow through the resistor.

At that time the resistor is not resisting the voltage. Because there is no resistance in it.

Short circuit must be like expanding the pipe from the tank. More voltage will flow through the resistor and damage all the other areas of the circuit.

To know more on how the resistor will act if it break down, then watch this video on @electronics electrical malayalam on youtube.
